Sunset on Senior Show

By:Morgan Bass

As the sun began to set over the hills across from the Mellwood Art Center, seniors continued to celebrate a year of hard work. Throughout the past four years, Male High seniors have collected multiple forms of art across varying mediums. From printmaking to photography, seniors collected their art to form showcases that summarized their art careers here at Dear Old High School.

Photography teacher Melody Drexler was all smiles during the show, “The senior art show is one of my favorite events of the entire year, it allows our seniors the opportunity to show off all the hard work they've been doing to their friends and family.”

Although the show was just for one night, students and teachers prepared weeks before. “A lot went into the show,” art teacher, Elizabeth Berry, says, “At the beginning of the year, we came up with three different t-shirt designs and sold those-- along with the senior art show shirts-- to help fund renting the space at Mellwood… Closer to the show, we began to collect art from each of the students, matted and hung them in the gallery. Not to mention, after the show was over, a handful of kids stayed after and helped take the artwork down.”

When asked about the turnout, Berry noted how crowded the gallery was, she explained that some of the horde came the art spectators outside of Male. She continued to note, “The Trolley Hop came through and stopped, so we got a lot of people from the community that came in and saw the show, as well.”

In the show, senior Julia True featured portraits of friends and artists she admired, “I challenged myself to draw a self portrait in the style of a Disney character, and from then I had a lot of  people asking me to draw their portraits as well. I chose to feature them in the art show because the subject matter is of people I love.”

True also mentioned her sentiments at the end of the show as everyone was taking down the artwork, “This show feels like the beginning of the end. It's the start of all the senior activities coming up soon.”

She continues, “For the past three years, I can remember my art teachers talking about the senior art show, and now it's is our time.”

And as the sun set on the 2018 senior art show, it was a bittersweet reminder that all too soon, the sun will set on the seniors' high school careers.
