This week, the Louisville Male High School Dance Team will be traveling to Florida to compete in the UDA National Championships. This is a championship the Dance Team has been participating in for years, with Kalli Jordan (11) stating, “UDA is the biggest high school nationwide competition in America and it definitely has some big competition, so even being able to compete and say we placed 8th in the nation last year is really awesome.”
Emma Smith (12) added, “At UDA we compete against so many teams that have the ability to practice everyday together all day. The pressure is on, everyone is expecting so much out of us so we just have to work up to them. Dance team is such an intense sport and is more competitive than some people think, that’s is what I love about it.”
As far as Louisville Male’s preparation goes, Kendall Dulaney (12) says, “We practice three times a week, for two hours each practice. Our coach is constantly pushing us to strive for perfection. We typically review formations, clean sections of the routine, and then either perform as a team or in groups. We’ve been preparing for this competition since the summer, and I’m excited to see how we do.”
Mariah Lanaye (10) agrees, stating “We have prepared for nationals since the beginning of the season! Every practice, performance, and game is our preparation for UDA nationals.” Hayley Horn (12) says, “We’ve been working our butts off to be able to put everything out on the floor this weekend! Last year we made it in the Top 10 so our goal this year is to make it into the Top 5!”
Preparation for large competitions such as the UDA Championships has not always been easy, though. Sarai Simpson (10) states, “We have been through many obstacles this year but we persevered. Hard practices, formation changes and conditioning are all things we had to do to be the best dance team in the state.”
Smith commented as well, stating “When winning is talked about, it just gets you so motivated and you can’t help but do your best and feel hungry for the title. The way things are placed this year, people are expecting more out of us and it’s only up to everyone to work as team and live up to it! I’m excited for nationals considering it’s my last year, we have to give it everything we have, for us seniors it’s our last ride. We have such high chances we just need to believe in ourselves!”
Simpson added, “nationals is very exciting. We always try to have the best attitude about competing against other dance teams. In Florida we motivate each other and push each other to perform at our highest level.”
Sami Reyes (11) responded, “I’m ready for all of us to put all our hardships behind us and leave everything out on the floor and the feeling of performing is something that nothing can replace. Hands down best feeling in the world.”
Hayley Horn (12) added, “I can’t wait until I get to share the floor one last time with this amazing group of girls who I also get to call my best friends.”
The UDA Dance Championship will be held February 2-4, 2018 in Orlando, Florida. Congratulations to our Louisville Male High School Dance Team on this achievement, let’s go dawgs!
