Ask Brooke: September Update

Dear Brooke,

I know that our first Pep Rally is coming up and then after that, the Male Manual spirit week. I’m a freshman and have no idea what to expect, or how to prepare?

Sincerely,

A worried Student

Hey there!

Pep Rallies at Male are so fun! It’s an hour of letting ourselves show our school spirit loud and proud. Be prepared to have your eardrums busted, your voice gone, and your body hot and sweaty. Don’t be afraid to go all out at these events; that’s what we want you to do. Spirit week has the same expectation. Go all out, a little on the crazy side. Don’t be scared that you’ll get made fun of, because you won’t. Everyone will be dressing up everyday, so you’ll blend in. And the main thing about these events is to just have fun.

Dear Brooke,

I am a freshman here and I am super nervous. The first few weeks have been hard on me and I need help adjusting from middle school to high school. How did you do it?

Sincerely,

A stressed freshman

Hey there!

The switch from middle school to high school can be very stressful. But there are ways to make it easier and smoother. Now that you are in block scheduling, it may seem like you have more classes than you are used to, but in reality it’s only one extra class than you are used to. Also, take advantage of your study skills period. Many students are able to get their homework finished in that hour and a half, not having to worry about doing it at home. And yes, I know that getting through the hallways is a struggle for a lot of people, but you can do it. To save time, have your locker set to where you only have to turn to the last number of your combination; or even better, try not to use your locker every in between period. You can carry your first two classes worth of materials with you and then carry your last two with you after that. People have also found it helpful to put certain class materials in friend’s lockers if theirs is closer that your locker. You have plenty of options for that. Another thing that will help is to have two backpacks, one for purple day and one for gold day. That will help you stay organized. Finally, get involved! There are so many clubs and organizations here at Male that will give you exposure to other people. And the teachers here are extremely helpful and friendly. You got this!

Dear Brooke,
I am a freshman here at male and I was wondering how do I get more involved because I’m not really involved in anything and just wondering how and what are some groups. I was also asking if I wanted to see about starting a new group who would I talk to.
Sincerely,
A curious student
